When you have been ploughing a creative furrow for some time you do start to wonder ( or at least I do ) , am I being repetitive here ? The most successful artists find new things to be engaged in or new ways of doing their thing. Two good examples Hockney and David Bowie. Long careers and multiple “incarnations” for both of them. I think what I love most about what I do is that it’s driven ( to a considerable degree ) by what I find.
The picture above shows a recent find ( after it’s been cleaned up, unbent and carefully hammered flat ) which I knew I wanted to use but was not certain how ? If I used it in its entirety then then the resulting picture would have been huge and much too heavy and unwieldy for anyone to bother themselves with. I thought about cutting it up and using the bits somehow. Like this ?
Or like this ?
I tried a few versions of this idea but eventually realised the way to do it was to use the piece itself as the background or canvas upon which to put additional bits as is my wont. Hence what I ended up with.
Not the best quality picture but you can see what I’ve done with the initial piece I found. This was a new way of working for me and as such gives one new ideas and urges to explore, which need in turn more similiar material to play with. My wish has been granted as at the weekend past I found the following.
I think it’s the transom of a boat which turned out to have two painted and delightfully distressed sides as seen below.
Clearly this piece needed careful consideration as to how best to use it. I wanted to use it as a background as with the previous picture. It’s shape and size precluded it’s use as seen.It was also unusably rotten in parts which meant cutting it up. But where to put my saw ? This is what I’ve ended up with, 4 separate pieces to play with. This side ?
Or the other, see below.
Both sides are very attractive but they will require careful thought and contemplation to make the best of them, whichever side. So another way of working is opened up for my exploration. Happy days ! All from what I find, whatever will I find next and where will that take me ?
