BOOtG is now taking place for the third year. This year there are nearly 80 pictures from 50 or so artists exhibited outdoors on the walls of properties in Haverfordwest for the next month. Yours truly has one up at the lower end of Market Street.
This year’s theme was Brighter Futures ( for Haverfordwest) so I’ve called the picture “Dyfodol Braf ” which is Welsh for Brighter Future. So far so imaginative. The standing figure is based on the sorts of posters which were standard in Communist era USSR or China upon which some heroic figure was seen gesturing or exhorting towards some grand state aim. The idea of the poster was always ” Do this ( whatever that was ) and you will be admitted to the brighter future which awaits the worthy “. Generally speaking that brighter future was no more than empty words and disappointment. The chaotic colours and shapes between the standing figure’s legs are there to suggest the trouble that often arises from this area ( ie, between a mans legs ). In short, don’t trust authority figures, don’t believe their promises and if you want a brighter future you have to get off your bum and work to make one happen. As one who has seen the Brexit referendum and is living through the ensuing chaos of the leaving process I don’t think I can do a picture that lives up to the reality nor could a picture adequately convey my scorn for the proponents of the current mess.
The bottom foreground of the picture is a continuous broken mixture of red and silver grey. I don’t think you could work out what this was so I shall reveal all. It was a “men at work ” roadside sign. This came in two bits from the eroding sea side dump at Crosby and was probably 1960’s sort of age. Thus we have the current scene physically above or on top of the this thing representing ” men at work “. This is now the past, underground, forgotten. Growing out of the past in the present are some futuristic flowers and an arrow pointing upwards. The only way is up indeed. Here’s to a brighter future. If BOOtG continues to grow then Harrywest is pretty sure to have a more interesting and brighter future for sure.
